I was at a Northwestern University football game and at the end i was walking out and saw a huge group of people by the locker rooms. I asked what they were there for and found out that they were all waiting for the visiting football team to leave, because then they would get to go in the locker room and keep anything the team had left behind. Used socks, dirty football gloves, and sweaty towels, why would people want to keep these things. Then I thought about why so many people were waiting, FREE STUFF. People, I think especially Americans, are obsessed with getting free things. Think about it, at a business fair what is the most appealing booth? I know for me and others that I have seen we love the place giving out free pens or free candy. Even when we don't need a pen or the calories from the candy, we still pick one up.

I think this highlights how Americans just want more stuff. We think subconsciously that the more possessions we have the happier we will be. When we don't have to pay to add to our collections its even better. Americans need to take a step back and stop focusing on material possessions and wanting more and more. Instead they should focus on what they have and how fortunate they are.
By the way the free stuff you get from this post is some perspective and a chance to read my thoughts. You are welcome.
I agree that many people are interested in the idea of getting something for free, but I don't think that's a characteristic unique to Americans. No matter how fortunate someone is, there is always something in someone else's life that is a little bit better, and humans become jealous of that sometimes. It could be argued that humans are innately jealous, and that we are also innately greedy. But I think they are both just survival mechanisms. Why sacrifice something for another thing, when we can get the other thing for free and keep our something? Getting things for free can be a good thing, but it can also result in greedy people. There has to be a balance between accepting gifts and taking what's not ours.
ReplyDeleteI think that being rewarded with gifts for not doing any work is a great example of what its like to be human. No matter how much we try to fight it, everyone is lazy. Free stuff helps prove how lazy everyone actually is, or in other words, how much we enjoy being rewarded for doing nothing. Most people would rather stock up on mints at the restaurant they just ate at than babysit for an hour and buy their own. Basically, we'd rather get it for free than work for it.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Maddie - not only Americans are on the hunt for free stuff. Yes, it is very prevalent in our society, like your example of a business booth showed, but I am almost certain that not many people would pass up the opportunity for free stuff. In the story that you described, the people may also be looking for the other team's stuff is because it may be more valuable. As odd as it sounds, a famous college football player's used gloves are probably worth something. Either they want to keep them to own something of value, or they plan on selling the items they find.
